Before I Knew.

So, I am not even going to COUNT how many months it has been since I have written. I'm not. Not even going to go there.

A blog post popped up in my time hop and I thought, "yes, I did used to be a blogger, didn't I?" I was pretty funny back then. When did I find time to write? When was I ever sitting down long enough to have a thought other than, "...did I remember to send the kids lunch boxes today?""...how long have these wet clothes been in the washer?" "...Is today Wednesday or Thursday?""...what in the hell did I come upstairs for anyway?" You know, the normal stuff...

Well, I've decided to take it back up y'all. Get this little keyboard clicking. So hang on to your hats. Because I have a lot to say.

Starting with a question.  Do you ever wish you didn't know so much? About every. little. thing.? I'm certain life was a whole lot simpler when we didn't know things like:

1. How many calories are in the hamburger and fries I'd like to order. (Please take this off of your menus people.) We do not want to be reminded of what is in this. Okay? We came out to enjoy ourselves, to not cook, and NOT obsess about how many calories we will need to burn off tomorrow. I'm serious. Stop it. We are out for a treat. Don't ruin it.

2. How fast our teenager is traveling at any given second down Davis Blvd. I personally do not have life 360 (or whatever it is), but I have tried to have conversations with people who do and literally watch their phones for an HOUR STRAIGHT to see where, (and how fast), their child is going. Sometimes it's best not to know. Or at least not obsess about it. Have them call you when they arrive somewhere. If they don't call, then worry. If my mom had this app back in 1988 to present, she would be in the grave from worry. So long as I stopped by Loves Country Store on Division in Guthrie, dropped a quarter in the payphone, and called before heading home, she was good!

3.  What all of our friends, our kid's friends, neighbors, classmates, etc... are doing, vacationing, working, buying, blah, blah, blah............ this list is long. Instagram. Facebook. Snapchat. Twitter. It serves a great purpose, but not for our sweet young peeps. Poor things. No wonder they are stressed out 24/7.

Okay, you get it. I could go on and on. What prompted this little thought was my little stroll through time in my archived photographs today. I've got a sick kiddo at home, so I found myself looking at my favorite photos of all time that I have taken. What is interesting to me is they were all taken when I very first received my DSLR camera. My first "big camera".. That I purchased off of eBay with a used lens and no manual, that smelled like cigarette smoke every time I put it up to my face. Before I knew what all of the big photographer words meant. Before I knew what aperture or rule of thirds or absolute resolution were. I thought bokeh was a fake word that someone made up.  BEFORE I KNEW.

Before I knew all of these rules, and restrictions and what looks right and wrong to the average eye... I took pictures from the heart. With less than par equipment. I shot what I loved. I didn't do it for money. I didn't do it because I wanted it to look like another photo I had seen. I did it for the pleasure of seeing that image portray EXACTLY what I wanted to say. EXACTLY what I wanted to capture. Back before I knew.

I didn't worry much about the fancy stuff. And I'm going back to that. Because that is why I got into this in the beginning. Here are some "before I knew" shots.

So, I will ask you again... Do you ever wish you just could stop your mind from all of the clutter? From all of the crap that everyone and their dog is trying to put in front of you? Do you ever wish you didn't know so much? It kind of interferes. Takes the fun right out of stuff. Don't let something take the fun out of what you do.

Whether that is the stinking calorie count on the menu at Chili's or the feed on your instagram. You do you. And think about how great it was to be blissfully ignorant.

Feels good to be back in blog land. Until next time.... MUAH!
